What      is      Social -Emotional      Learning

We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. It's the skills we all need to become great humans!

How      do        I      book      an       appointment?

What     is    the    difference     between    coaching    and    counselling?

Counseling and coaching are both valuable tools for supporting kids, but they have different focuses. Counseling often focuses on the past, and helps children explore and work through trauma, and psychological issues,  Coaching,  while trauma informed, is focused on the present moment and looks toward the future, helping kids build skills, confidence, and strategies to identify and achieve their goals.

A simple way to think about it is this: If a child experiences an injury, like a broken leg, you’d seek out a doctor (counsellor) to provide the necessary treatment and care for recovery. But if they simply need to build strength and confidence in their abilities, you’d work with a trainer (coach) who focuses on teaching new skills and helping them grow.

What      does       a      coaching      session       look       like?

Our coaching sessions are active, engaging, and filled with purpose. Each session builds naturally on skills learned in previous meetings through a variety of fun activities which could include meaningful storybooks, games, role-playing, crafts, movement and imaginative play. Every activity is carefully chosen to support your child's growth, whether they're in our Roots Program or exploring new skills in our Explorer Programs. Sessions move at your child's pace, mixing fun with learning in a way that keeps them engaged and excited to return.

Do    we    offer    our    services     virtually?

We currently do not offer services virtually. If there is enough interest in virtual sessions it may be a possibility in the future.

What    happens     at      a      discovery          meeting?

Our Discovery Meeting sets the foundation for our journey together. In this focused conversation, we'll explore your child's story, understand your family's day-to-day experiences, and identify what success looks like for you. Upon booking a Discovery Meeting you will be sent forms that need to be completed prior to your scheduled meeting. By reviewing your completed forms beforehand, we make the most of our time together to build a meaningful support plan.

Do      you       do       session s        for       caregivers?

Coaching: There are two included parent coaching sessions that come with the Roots program. These are important as the skills children learn need to be practiced outside of sessions for maximum benefits and growth. These sessions will be done at the same time as the child's first and last session of their first program. Additionally, there is an option for caregivers looking for extra and/or ongoing support. Please ask about this option at your discovery meeting or with your child's coach/counsellor.

Counselling: After each session, parents will receive a session report from Deandra. The session reports will highlight the main focus of the session, and coping skills they can implement at home. Parents are more than welcome to ask questions after the session or via phone call.

Do    caregivers   join    in    on    sessions?

We've found that children are often most able to explore, grow, and express themselves freely in a space that's just their own. While parents are amazing supporters of their child's journey, having a separate space with their coach/counsellor allows children to build independence and confidence in managing new situations. They can express thoughts and feelings without worry about parent reactions, practice new skills without looking to parents for guidance, and develop a trusting relationship with themselves and their coach/counsellor. That being said caregivers are more then welcome to spend the session in our comfortable lobby and enjoy a coffee.

Do      you      support     children       with       diagnosis     and/or       learning       disabilities?

Yes! Our team is highly experienced in working with children with different types of developmental delays and diagnosis. We feel very comfortable in tailoring a program to suit the unique needs of children that benefit from extra support and that learn in their own way.

What    age     range    of    children    do    you    support   ?

Counselling: 10 to 18 years of age
